A Company of Fools is Ottawa’s only independent professional Shakespeare company. We are a not-for-profit incorporation and a registered charity. We provide programming all year round.

The mandate of the Fools is to produce innovative, entertaining and accessible shows based on the works of William Shakespeare. We produce both collage pieces, made up of scenes from Shakespeare’s works, and full-length plays. We are a physical theatre company and use the techniques of Clown, Commedia Del’arte, Mask, Puppetry, Vaudeville and Slapstick. We are unique in that we use these tools in conjunction with a strong understanding of text and a desire to tell Shakespeare’s stories in as clear and entertaining a manner as possible.

"The art of stage developed from mime, which is the representation of inner movements by visible outer motions. Mime is the stem of the tree that has branched into dance and drama... It is to be expected that mime, as expressive of effort and a fundamental creative activity of man, will, after its long period of neglect, become once more an important factor of civilized progress, when its real sense and meaning have been reacquired. " - Rudolph Laban (1879-1950)

Now Cympal has increased its scope, focusing on feature-length narrative productions. Although no side won in the digital revolution, we feel strongly that the battle is behind us, and that respect has been gained for digital productions with integrity.
